A Report on the Condition, Status and Land Use History of the Lolo Creek Watershed, Missoula County, Montana
By Montana Trout/ the Trout Conservancy
In June 2004, Montana Trout released an assessment of the Lolo Creek watershed. Lolo Creek is a small to medium sized stream in western Montana, with a watershed covering some 175,270 acres. It is a typical mountain-born cobble bottomed stream; its headwaters are on the Idaho border, and it flows eastward about 35 miles to a confluence with the Bitterroot River. The 2004 assessment of the Lolo Creek watershed was fairly general in nature, and was focused on land use history as much as on specific qualities of the watershed. The intent behind the 2004 assessment was to characterize the Lolo Creek watershed as a precursor to watershed restoration planning and activities. This document is an assessment of most of Lolo Creek’s tributary streams with particular regard to trout habitat condition and restoration opportunities.

This report addresses natural resource management issues of the Lolo Creek watershed, and provides suggestions for resolving some of those issues. It is focused on the main stem of Lolo Creek (and not tributary streams). Also, it examines the history of land use in the watershed to provide perspective on the current condition of the watershed. It is not a scientific document full of numbers and data, does not pretend to be an exhaustive source of all relevant information, and does not present many new findings. This report is a description of what the Lolo Creek watershed is like in 2004 and what might be done about some watershed-scale problems. This report is intended to be useful to virtually anyone who wants to work towards the restoration of the watershed. Download the PDF file by clicking on the name above.

Montana Trout answers a call - a call to protect, enhance and restore Montana's wild trout populations so that this generation can pass on an intact natural legacy. By caring for Montana's trout, we also do a service for all the Montana businesses based on abundant trout populations, and for all the communities (human and wild) within trout bearing watersheds.
