Climate Change Initiative

Big Changes On The Way: Bull trout distribution in the upper Columbia River basin under current conditions (left) and with a 5 degree Celcius increase (right, also called the "Game Over" scenario), which will likely occur this century as greenhouse gases heat up our climate (Rieman 2007/RMRS, USFS).

The Trout Conservancy's 'Climate Change Initiative'  is a proactive strategy to identify those portions of northern Rockies watersheds that are most likely to withstand, due to snowfields, lakes or groundwater, the effects of global warming. As these places that offer trout the best chances of survival are mapped, we can then figure out what sorts of habitat restoration projects (from creating structures to protecting in-stream flows) are most needed in each. Then, we will work with our partners to develop and implement these projects. We'll also have the data to advocate for specific conservation measures.
