Did You Know? - About Us

"What's the difference between Trout Conservancy and Trout Unlimited?"

This often-asked question has an easy answer. We are not politically or legally oriented.

We are a Montana based organization devoted to enhancing, restoring and protecting wild trout habitat through direct, hands-on projects.

Most of every dollar we get goes to 'on the ground' projects with direct benefits for Montana's wild trout.

The Trout Conservancy is proud of the work we do. We have developed and funded projects both locally and statewide. Here are a few of the projects you can read about under our projects section and a few of the projects currently in the works.

Belmont Creek - our first project, this one restored trout habitat in a lower Blackfoot River tributary.

Chamberlain Creek - a restoration project for Westslope cutthroat trout spawning in the middle Blackfoot River drainage.

Pattee Creek - stream side restoration in the Missoula Valley

Lolo Creek - restoration of trout habitat at the Earl Tennant campground, development of the Lolo Watershed group and replacement of culverts in upper Lolo Creek watershed.

Midas Creek - replacement of an old culvert that blocked access to spawning areas for native trout.

Upper Lolo Creek Culverts - replacement of 5 fish blocking culverts in the upper reaches of Lolo Creek on the Lolo National Forest in summer 2008-2009.

Hughes Creek (ID) - creation of debris jams to benefit native Chinook salmon, steelhead and bull trout.

Some of our most recent work includes...

Anti-Entrainment - development of a statewide program to promote the installation and maintenance fish screens on irrigation ditches to stop the annual death by entrapment of thousands of wild trout.

Climate Change Initiative - Our program to help wild trout in the northern Rockies survive climate change.
